Gotcha Covered

Driving through Lane County today we found ourselves taking a detour so we could check out a few covered bridges. Always interesting.

The Lowell Bridge (1945) is now a interpretive center, very interesting
The Parvin Bridge (1921)
The Office Bridge (1945) is undergoing restoration
The Pengra Bridge (1938)

Then a short hike to Salt River Falls, second highest in Oregon

Another lakeside campsite, getting ready for campfire hotdogs

The pictures of the covered bridges are great. I always wondered why they covered them? I see a hammock in the background of the campsite. I bet Don enjoyed that. The van looks really clean in all the pictures.
Thank you.

The primary reason for the cover - to protect the wooden bridge and make it last longer. Early on the bridges were also used as meeting places, and for social functions because they were usually the largest structure in the area.
Very interesting and makes a lot of sense for the times. Why didn't I think of that? Because in this modern world we don't remember what it was like back then. Thank you.
