We spent a good part of our second day in Juneau hiking the area around the Mendenhall Glacier. Most of the public lands in southeastern Alaska are part of the Tongass National Forest (the largest national forest in the United States at 17 million acres) which is a temperate rain forest. Mix abundant rain with moderate (for Alaska) temperatures and you get a lot of green - which is good, because we like, hikin' thru the lichen.
